Last month he announced the relaunch of his platform mobygratis.
Originally launched in 2007 to give budding creators on a budget free material to use on their projects, the platform was years ahead of its time. Over the 2010s it underwent a number of relaunches but is now back and seems to be more robust and bountiful than ever. To date, mobygratis offers access to 500 brand-new instrumental tracks, with 250 more coming later this year and another 500 in the pipeline for 2026.
“Free is a simple concept. mobygratis is just free,” states the famous pioneer / animal rights ambassador. “There are no strings, no structure to generate revenue, just music, made available for anyone who wants to create.”
There are only two conditions for the use of this music: it can’t be used to promote any right wing activities or used to sell any meat, dairy or animal products. Seems very reasonable to us!
Moby also shared the platform’s new high-resolution multitrack capabilities, which allow users to remix and customize tracks like never before. The audience he’s aiming for are a diverse community of students and all types of creatives from MCs to singers to film makers to podcasters to documentary makers, DJs, producers and even social media personalities.
“During the pandemic, I went into my archives and ‘finished’ around 1,500 unreleased songs for mobygratis,” adds Moby. “They’re all instrumentals, and my hope is that people can find the music and do whatever they want with it; remix it, sing on it, use it for films, choreography, social posts, whatever. Hopefully, mobygratis is egalitarian chaos at its most open and unregulated. We’ve also included links to some of my favorite charities, so people can pay it forward if they’re moved to.”
