This Thursday, November 28: underground London crews Foundations Series and Basics Records will be collaborating to take over London’s Venue MOT for a great cause – Rave For Roofs. This charity bash is being held to raise funds for Crisis who are doing work to support the homeless community in the UK. The line-up for the event is stacked with jungle, hardcore and techno artists including Decibella, Louise Plus One, Rhi Spect and many others, including a surprise mystery headliner!
The line up alone makes the event a must-go, but if that wasn’t already sweet enough, all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Crisis. During the winter months especially, it is important to keep in mind the growing number of those suffering from homelessness in the UK. Crisis is a leading charity that has made a difference to the lives of so many and is dedicated to their mission of ending homelessness.
What better way to raise funds for a good cause than through a rave?
“Homelessness in London is now at its highest-ever level, with at least one in 50 Londoners experiencing homelessness,” Foundations Series promoter Andy tells us. “With winter fast approaching it seemed one of the most obvious and immediate issues we could pull together as a community to contribute something towards. It almost feels like an accepted by-product of rampant capitalism which we can only see getting worse.”
He makes a sobering point: the mass of the homeless community, although alarming, often means that the public generally accepts homelessness as an unfortunate fact of life rather than inquiring into the systems that have allowed it to persist and grow.
Homeless people are often neglected through misrepresentation and underrepresentation within the media and also in parliament. Andy reminds us that homelessness is an involuntary circumstance that everyone is susceptible to.
“The one thing people should realise about the homeless community,” he adds. “Is how immensely difficult it is to get yourself out of that situation once there.”
For those of us who are lucky enough to have a roof, the situation on November 28 is simple: get together, dance and help raise money for those who need it. You’ll be in good company as Foundation Series will be joined by Basics Records for this event. A fellow South London crew of kindred spirits, Andy explains how Basics Records are an ideal collaborator for the rave.
“Pete Sideshow from Basics Records approached us with the idea of collating on a night, he’d taken inspiration from one of our previous lineups,” Andy tells us. “It was timely to say the least as we’d literally just been pondering the idea of a potential collab with Basics. Both Basics Records and Foundations Series take influence from legacy UK dance music and the early 90s rave scene, so it felt like a natural fit for us. Pete is also great energy and a great connector.”
