Welcome to 1 More Thing’s first premiere of 2024: UV Rage from UK new-gen talents Artillery and Vispera, a superb deep and slinky minimal cut that features on a brand new future-focused VA on Phase Records – Perspective II.
B2b with other forward-focused high-tech tear-ups from the likes of Inertia, Ominous, Xyde, Dapreme, Premonition and label boss Gifta herself, UV Rage goes like this:
“I’m really proud of this one, it’s one of my favourite tracks I’ve done so far,” says producer Artillery who’s been resident with Phase since the platform was launched by Gifta in 2020. Over the years with Phase, he’s so far developed an impressive collection of cuts on label with various free downloads, his EP Blood Overdose last year and a cameo role on the inaugural Perspective VA last year.
“It’s the first track we’ve done together,” he continues. “It was very organic. Eve played one of my tunes before and I shared that online. Then we bumped into each other at a Critical party afters, chatted for a bit and decided we definitely needed to do a tune together.”
“Within days he’d sent me a beat and said he wanted to get moving straight away,” adds Eve, AKA Vispera, a rising Manchester MC, poet and DJ. “I was like, ‘Okay wow, sick!’ I knew we’d do something special from that moment.”
Special for both Eliot Artillery and Eve Vispera means a track has to be meaningful and carry more than just a groove. “I like to follow a theme or message and concept if I’m writing,” explains Eve. “And I knew Eliot was the same when we started chatting.”
From candid ‘let’s collab, mate’ afters chat to finding a creative kindred spirit in a matter of days, Artillery and Vispera had made a powerful impression which could be felt in the music, too. “I asked El what he was thinking when he made the beat and he said something about the extremities of mental health and trying to keep control of things and losing it,” explains Eve whose MC journey takes root as a spoken word artist and poet.
“That’s the UV part,” says Eliot. “Weather changes like mood changes. That’s where the idea comes from for the track – Ultra Violet Rage.”
“That really resonated with me,” continues Eve. “I had some bars I’d written about the idea of hidden injustice and struggles of youth, inner turmoil unseen from the outside, especially during lockdown. We developed those ideas together and that’s how the track came about.”
Taking on a life of its own, like all the best tunes do, UV Rage has now also led to more collaborations between Vispera and Artillery. They’re already working with SIDDALL, on a 140 track and more ideas are loaded in the chamber for the future, too…
“Loads more ideas!” smiles Eve who also DJs as well as performs and writes as an MC (check out her mighty Full Spectrum above) “It’s been very exciting to experiment in this way. And this is only my second release. I’ve got a lot of plans for next year but it’s so nice to find and work with like-minded people who care about something artistic. We all love a bit of raving, but making something meaningful and creative is much more fulfilling isn’t it?”
It definitely is from 1 More Thing’s POV. We’re excited to see where both Eve and Eliot take their art this year…
