“I thought it would be a fun little thing to kick off a new kinda chapter of my music with,” explains Contra:Flow. Don’t be fooled by his alias – he’s not actually a traffic flow system, he’s a proper legit human named Cameron and he has a really interesting journey to where he’s at right now, aged 23.
Currently studying at Bristol’s dBS Institute, prior to this cheeky BOOTleg (not sorry), he’d released drum & bass on labels such as Liondub International and Creative. And prior to that, he could write you a banging will or maybe even sell you a house.
“My family is musical. My father is in a folk band and my mother played the double bass in the orchestra, so music was always around,” explains Cam who was given his first drumkit at the age of five.
“But then I fell out of touch with music during the middle of my teenage years because I had an idea that making loads of money is the most important thing in life. I got an actual job as an estate agent, and then as a will writer and I realised earning money wasn’t making me happy. So, while I still can, I’ll move to Bristol, do the music thing and give uni another go.”
Studies are now in full flow for Mr Flow as he finds more meaning in life beyond the 9-5, and it’s caused a change in musical direction.
“I got into D&B at a time when the fast paced energy matched my own energy,” he explains. “Now I’ve come to Bristol, met my partner and feel a lot more clarity. I know what I want to do and where I want to go. The tempo of my life has slowed down a bit so the tempo of the music I’m resonating with has slowed down as well.”
